When traveling to Jamaica, which currency should I opt for?

Updated: Jan 21

Best currency for Jamaica

Hey, when you're in Jamaica, you'll mostly use the Jamaican Dollar (JMD). It can be a bit of a hassle when you're in a new place and they prefer US dollars over their own currency. But no worries, here are some money tips for your trip.

So, in Jamaica, you can pretty much use US dollars everywhere. But if you're venturing off the hotel or exploring local spots, it's good to have some Jamaican cash on you. Using US dollars outside touristy areas might not give you the best deal, and the same goes for using Jamaican dollars where they prefer US currency.

For your day-to-day shopping, feel free to use your credit card, just double-check the exchange rate beforehand. Keep around JMD 5k - 10k for any small expenses and Oh, and for tipping if that's your thing! . Skip exchanging money at the airport to avoid extra fees. Instead, look for a cambio or a dual currency ATM in town.
